Kayongo Edward

Kayongo is completing a Master’s in Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Makerere University in Uganda with funding from National Institutes of Health through Infectious Diseases Research Collaboration (IDRC), Uganda. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from Makerere University. He is interested in disease prevention with particular emphasis on infectious diseases that are a big burden to the health systems in Africa and can easily spread from person to person across boarders.

Kayongo’s graduate work involves the evaluation of potential utilization of Reactive Case Detection as a possible malaria control strategy in a malaria elimination setting. His work was presented at the 2018 Multi-lateral Initiative on Malaria (MIM) conference and he is supervised by Professor Joan Kalyango and Dr. Joaniter Nankabirwa under the mentorship of Professor Grant Dorsey and Dr. Joaniter Nankabirwa. He currently works for Uganda-CWRU-Research collaboration as a research pharmacist, and Global Health Uganda as a research pharmacist, epidemiologist and biostatistician.

A lot of research has been conducted worldwide in the control of infectious diseases, but most of it remains in the science world and has not been transformed into policy. As an incoming Queen Elizabeth Scholar, Kayongo will gain more knowledge in health systems strengthening and gain the skills of pushing for policy using research evidence and thus contribute to the eventual control of infectious diseases.
