Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that typically develops between the ages of 10 to 14 (but can be at any age), affects roughly 300,000 Canadians and is increasing at an estimated 4.4% per year. Serious health complications from Type 1 diabetes are preventable with awareness of the signs and symptoms of the disease. This knowledge can reduce people who develop the most serious symptoms and complications of Type 1 diabetes.
