In this talk the health technology assessment (HTA) team from the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Evaluation in Vancouver provided an overview of economic modelling in the context of HTA. They began by setting economic modelling amidst other types of modelling commonly used (particularly during COVID). Next they outlined the basic steps of an HTA – with specific reference to ‘rapid HTA’ – and describe where economic modelling comes into play. They then provided some details on the modelling process – essentially what it is and how a basic model is developed - including what evidence is typically drawn on in support of this activity. They closed with some common pitfalls to watch for as well as the reach of these studies in terms of policy making.
